About 7,806 cases of Tuberculosis was recorded in Bauchi in 2022, as the world observed Tuberculosis Day in 2023.
At a news conference on Monday, Dr. Sani Mohammad, the executive secretary, of the Bauchi State Agency for the Prevention of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Leprosy, and Malaria, disclosed this.
At the press conference, Mohammed spoke in place of Dr. Sabiu Gwalabe, commissioner for health. According to him, the number was up 2,154 from the 5,652 reported in 2021.
To increase public awareness of TB and initiatives to end the pandemic, the WHO designated March 24 as World Tuberculosis Day each year.

He said that the 2022 figure was the highest ever recorded in the state, rising by almost 53% from the 2021 level.
“Out of the 5,518 new cases that were placed on treatment in 2022, about 5,192; that is 94 percent were successfully treated at the end of the year.
“Bauchi State currently has 794 free tuberculosis treatment centers, 127 diagnostic centers, and 15 GeneXperts,’’ he said.
According to Mohammed, case studies were being actively conducted throughout Bauchi State by the state administration, working with implementing partners like Breakthrough Action-Nigeria.
In order to raise awareness, he stated that a number of phone-in television and radio programs will be held in honor of World TB Day in 2023.
Moreover, free testing and treatment for TB, COVID-19, HIV, hepatitis, and malaria would be offered, along with nutritional help for select patients.
Dr. Yakubu Abdullahi, Director of the Bauchi State Tuberculosis Control Program, stated in his remarks that the organization will train pediatric doctors from secondary and tertiary institutions on case detection among children.
He said that in order to find children with TB, the organization worked in conjunction with nutritional clinics around the state.
“Diagnosing tuberculosis in children is a challenge, but we have decided to use their stools as samples,’’ Abdullahi said.
