President Muhammadu Buhari has claimed that the scarcity of naira notes caused by his government has reduced the prevalence of vote-buying.
After voting in Daura, Katsina State, the President advised Nigerians not to accept money from vote-buyers and instead vote their conscience.
Several Nigerians lamented their inability to purchase goods or travel because of the national crisis brought on by the currency shortage.
The initiative, which many deemed to be badly timed and handled, had earned the Central Bank of Nigeria harsh criticism.

After casting his ballot at Ward A, Sarkin Yara Polling Unit, 003 in Katsina, Buhari spoke to the media on how to handle vote-buying;
“I am aware that the money is not there like before for people to sway voters like they used to do. And if they bring out money, the people should pocket it and still vote their conscience.”
In a statement on Saturday, Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, made this information known. President Buhari said in the statement, “Nigerians know we mean what we say, and they will vote for us again.”
According to the President, his administration has “diminished” the practice of purchasing votes. He bragged that the All Progressives Congress will win the national elections for governor and state assembly.
The President declared that the outcome of the presidential election, in which Bola Tinubu was declared the winner, did not surprise him. He praised APC for its meticulous and precise marketing.
He noted that the APC picked a party chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, who had served as a two-term governor in Nasarawa State and a member of the Senate, with experience that would aid the party.
