Despite Defeated Party's Cries, British High Commissioner Lauds Presidential Elections

The February 25, 2023, Presidential and National Assembly elections have been hailed as positive and exciting by the departing British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing.

Although there were some hiccups during the election, the ambassador said Nigerians should be happy with the procedure since it provided promises for future democratic administration in the nation.

Tuesday in Abuja, after paying a courtesy call to Senate President Ahmad Lawan, Ms. Laing made the announcement while responding to queries from media at the Senate wing of the National Assembly.

She said; “I made very good friends. I love Nigerian music a lot. The culture here is so rich secondly the politics in Nigeria is so fascinating. I was here till the last election and I finished with this election. I’m impressed with Nigeria’s democratic journey.

“Yes, a bit of a setback. But overall, I see this as positive and Nigeria should be proud but with a remarkable difference when I came in 2019.

“Nigeria is the biggest democracy in Africa. The world watches your progress to democracy. Though there were some disappointments in the last election, overall, every Nigerian should be proud because since 1999 Nigeria has been on the right track as far as participatory democracy is concerned.

“The election here is very different and fascinating as you are moving to a three-party system or maybe even four. I think Nigerians as well should realize that their votes count.”

In addition to the election, the British envoy praised Nigerians for their perseverance in the face of challenges.

“There has been a marked difference from when I arrived in 2019. There have been some tough times, we had COVID, and obviously, insecurity has gone much worse since I have been here, but Nigerian people are incredibly resilient and very entrepreneurial.

“I have seen their positions all over the world and I remain very optimistic about Nigeria’s future. It has been a wonderful time. I am very sad to be going, but because the UK’s partnership with Nigeria is very strong, within a short time, I am going to be coming back,” she added.

OBIdient Movement Is Not Tribal - Peter Obi

The second runner-up of the concluded presidential election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Peter Obi has dismissed claims that the OBIdient movement is fueled by tribe, ethnicity, and religion.

According to the Labour Partyman in a statement from his official social media handle, the movement is the arrowhead in the take-back Nigeria mission, and saving of democracy.

He wrote; “In the life of every nation, there is a turning point. For Nigeria, that time is now; a time to save Nigeria, save our democracy, and give the Nigerian youths hope. The OBIdient Movement has been the arrowhead in the take-back Nigeria mission.”

The former governor of Anambra claims that his position in the Movement is that of a focal point, emphasizing the fact that Nigeria is still a secular nation.

As a result, the movement is neither about tribe nor faith, nor is there any attempt to Christianize Nigeria or further Igbo interests.

Peter Obi continued by expressing his desire for a brand-new Nigeria in which the progeny of nobody will rise to prominence.

A country where the interests of the whole youth from the six geopolitical zones are prioritized over the interests of any particular group; one where national interests, rather than those of any particular group, are the driving force.

“No one should ascribe ethnic or religious coloration to the OBIdient Movement. Nigeria is one and my ambition is to become the President of a United and Indivisible Nigeria,” he added.
