Wike Vows To Remain In PDP Amid Leadership Tussle

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has stated that contrary to some expectations, he and his loyalists in Rivers State will not leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but remain to continue the fight for internal democracy.

Governor Wike stated this during a meeting with stakeholders of the party across the 319 wards of the state at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Port Harcourt on Thursday.

He said retreating from a fight is a sign of weakness. The meeting was to brief the party leaders on the recent happenings in the party and intimate them of the plan by the Governor to hold a media chat tomorrow at 10 am to speak on the state of the PDP in the country.

One thing I have always told people is if anybody is thinking, doing anything to think that we will leave PDP, foul. We will do the fight in the party. We are not like them when in 2014 they walked out of Eagle Square. They’ve forgotten. They walked out and joined APC. Is it not correct?” Wike said.

Did they remain to fight inside the party? But we remained; they ran away. Now, there is a fight in the party, we will not run. We will fight it in this party. Those who run away from fights are weak people. We will not. So, everybody should know this is the state where we are so that nobody tells you all kinds of stories.”

Wike said the planned media chat is to publish his side of the story, which he maintained is the truth, and expose the ill characters of some persons who pride themselves as national leaders.

According to him, after the chat, it will be left for Nigerians to decide if such people are still worthy of the ovation they are accorded. Governor Wike wondered why the PDP which is promising to unify Nigeria, cannot unite the party.

Governor Wike says despite the internal crisis at the national level and a pocket of antagonism by some ungrateful PDP members in Rivers State, the party will retain all elective positions in the state.

The PDP is currently occupying all three senatorial seats, 13 House of Representatives positions, 32 state House of Assembly seats, 23 Council chairmanship, and 319 councilorship positions.

Wike, a former minister, boasted of being well ahead of his detractors, saying he gets wind of every plan before it is executed.

He also warned party members in the state against acting as moles because there will be no loopholes in the strategy that will be adopted by the party in the state for the 2023 elections.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the PDP in Rivers State, Ambassador Desmond Akawor, says members of the party in the State are committed to supporting the political ideals of Governor Wike and will obey his instructions on the next line of actions ahead of the elections.

Akawor, a former Nigerian Ambassador to South -Korea, says the party is pleased with the way Governor Wike has been running the state both in administration and politics.

Peter Obi Promises To Fix National Grid Collapse Issue

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of Labour Party, has promised to fix the national grid collapse challenge Nigeria has frequently battled in recent times.

It would be recalled that two days ago, some parts of Nigeria experienced a total blackout as the national grid collapsed for the seventh time this year (2022).

Reacting to the development, Obi in a series of tweets, stated that his team has a strategic plan to progressively scale up power generation and the liberalisation of the transmission infrastructure in the country, to ensure that Nigerians enjoy adequate and stable power supply from 2023 onwards.

The tweets read: “The report of yet another national grid collapse is very disturbing to me and is a reminder of the long rescue and recovery journey ahead of us. Effective power generation, transmission and distribution remain a national security issue.

This also places power on the front burner of campaign and policy. Painfully, this latest episode is the 7th national grid collapse in 2022. As part of the Obi-Datti policy plan, we have put together a strategic plan to progressively scale up power generation, and the liberalisation of the transmission infrastructure in the country, to ensure that Nigerians enjoy adequate and stable power supply from 2023 onwards. Power is critical to the development and sustainability of all sectors of the national economy.

For us, power remains a top priority. Under my watch, national grid collapse will become a matter of history and a reference point for erstwhile administrations.”

We had also announced that the members of the Campaign Council report to the Campaign Headquarters on that day to collect their letters of appointment.

“However, due to the expansion of the list to accommodate more stakeholders and interests within the APC family, we have decided to adjust the timetable of these activities in order to ensure everyone is on board before activities officially commence. Ortom Distances Self From Wike's Call For Ayu's Resignation

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has distanced himself from his Rivers State counterpart, Nyesom Wike, who had since been seeking the resignation of Iyorchia Ayu as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ortom, who’s a longstanding ally of Wike, made his submission in a statement cited by Newsrand on Tuesday, September 27, 2022.

Contradicting Wike’s position that Ayu must resign to resolve the ongoing crisis in the party, Ortom expressed confidence in the PDP National Chairman.

The statement read: “Governor Ortom vouched for the integrity and capacity of Dr Iyorchia Ayu to lead and rebuild the PDP to victory and rescue Nigeria from the misrule of the APC maladministration. That is why Ayu was returned unopposed by the northern caucus of the party and got elected as the national chairman of the PDP at the party’s convention.

Where was Jemgbagh Development Association, when Governor Ortom galvanised support from across the leaders of the party to make Dr. Ayu PDP’s National Chairman? What was their contribution to that project that they now want to use clannish stance to blackmail the governor?

“This amorphous and emergency Jemgbagh Development Association, Abuja, which has never been heard of before, is now masquerading as the voice of Jemgbagh to embark on campaign of calumny against Governor Ortom, who has worked selflessly for the people of Benue State.

Governor Ortom is more Jemgbagh than most of the people claiming it now. This is fact, because he has done more for Jemgbagh, both in terms of appointments and projects executed as well as patronage in the area, than even one of the Jemgbagh sons, who was governor. Besides, Governor Ortom has consistently worked for the unity of Benue State and will never stand in the way of any of her citizens, either here in the state or in the diaspora.

For those, who claimed to be leaders of this Jemgbagh Development Association, Abuja, we urge them to be truly developmental in their drive to build cohesion among the people and attract real development to their area rather than engaging in mischief or blackmail.”
