Afenifere Explains Why It's Backing Peter Obi For President

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Gregory Obi, has disclosed his plans to reduce corruption when he wins the 2023 Presidential election.

In a series of tweets from his official social media handle, the former Anambra State Governor reveals that the removal of gas subsidy is a way to drastically reduce corruption and reduce the high cost of governance.

“We will reduce the subsidy cost by over 50 %. We will support local refining for domestic use and price strictly in Naira, Once we tackle insecurity and farmers’ returns to farms, our food production will go up and inflation will go down through the reduced food prices.

“The removal of subsidies, effectively reduces corruption to a minimal level, reduced the bloated cost of governance, and above all, supports and incentivizes export to stabilize the currency exchange rate,” Peter Obi tweeted.

The Labour Party’s flagbearer also promises accountability for the Nation’s security when he becomes President.

Revealing a way to end insecurity, Peter Obi announces total security architecture reform and an introduction to Federal, State, and Community policing, with proper ammunition and a technologically driven security system.

Not excluding the private sector, he assures total support and investment in the power value chain through a multifaceted approach, particularly the transmission infrastructure.

Although the Buhari-led administration has focused on tackling corruption, with major actions taken, the country is still faced with major fraud.

According to a 2020 US Department of State’s Country Reports on Human Rights Practices, the scale of corruption in Nigeria under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is “massive, widespread, and pervasive.”

Peter Obi Promises To Fix National Grid Collapse Issue

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of Labour Party, has promised to fix the national grid collapse challenge Nigeria has frequently battled in recent times.

It would be recalled that two days ago, some parts of Nigeria experienced a total blackout as the national grid collapsed for the seventh time this year (2022).

Reacting to the development, Obi in a series of tweets, stated that his team has a strategic plan to progressively scale up power generation and the liberalisation of the transmission infrastructure in the country, to ensure that Nigerians enjoy adequate and stable power supply from 2023 onwards.

The tweets read: “The report of yet another national grid collapse is very disturbing to me and is a reminder of the long rescue and recovery journey ahead of us. Effective power generation, transmission and distribution remain a national security issue.

This also places power on the front burner of campaign and policy. Painfully, this latest episode is the 7th national grid collapse in 2022. As part of the Obi-Datti policy plan, we have put together a strategic plan to progressively scale up power generation, and the liberalisation of the transmission infrastructure in the country, to ensure that Nigerians enjoy adequate and stable power supply from 2023 onwards. Power is critical to the development and sustainability of all sectors of the national economy.

For us, power remains a top priority. Under my watch, national grid collapse will become a matter of history and a reference point for erstwhile administrations.”

Ortom Distances Self From Wike's Call For Ayu's Resignation

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has distanced himself from his Rivers State counterpart, Nyesom Wike, who had since been seeking the resignation of Iyorchia Ayu as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ortom, who’s a longstanding ally of Wike, made his submission in a statement cited by Newsrand on Tuesday, September 27, 2022.

Contradicting Wike’s position that Ayu must resign to resolve the ongoing crisis in the party, Ortom expressed confidence in the PDP National Chairman.

The statement read: “Governor Ortom vouched for the integrity and capacity of Dr Iyorchia Ayu to lead and rebuild the PDP to victory and rescue Nigeria from the misrule of the APC maladministration. That is why Ayu was returned unopposed by the northern caucus of the party and got elected as the national chairman of the PDP at the party’s convention.

Where was Jemgbagh Development Association, when Governor Ortom galvanised support from across the leaders of the party to make Dr. Ayu PDP’s National Chairman? What was their contribution to that project that they now want to use clannish stance to blackmail the governor?

“This amorphous and emergency Jemgbagh Development Association, Abuja, which has never been heard of before, is now masquerading as the voice of Jemgbagh to embark on campaign of calumny against Governor Ortom, who has worked selflessly for the people of Benue State.

Governor Ortom is more Jemgbagh than most of the people claiming it now. This is fact, because he has done more for Jemgbagh, both in terms of appointments and projects executed as well as patronage in the area, than even one of the Jemgbagh sons, who was governor. Besides, Governor Ortom has consistently worked for the unity of Benue State and will never stand in the way of any of her citizens, either here in the state or in the diaspora.

For those, who claimed to be leaders of this Jemgbagh Development Association, Abuja, we urge them to be truly developmental in their drive to build cohesion among the people and attract real development to their area rather than engaging in mischief or blackmail.”
