2023: Sanwo-Olu Takes A Swipe At Funke Akindele, Others

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos has taken a swipe at his opposition, including actress Funke Akindele, in the 2023 governorship election in the state.

In an interview on Channels TV monitored by Newsrand, Sanwo-Olu said Akindele who’s running alongside Olajide Adediran, popularly called Jandor, and others don’t have the quality experience to govern Lagos.

According to the governor, Lagos State is not an experiment. Hence, only those who have demonstrated their leadership quality deserve the governor’s seat.

But how do you begin to start, what about his pedigree? You can’t run a business of 100 people but you want to run an economy. The governance of Lagos is not a trial and error, you need to hit the ground running. Lagosians have seen the experience and they will vote for a man that will roll up his sleeves to keep the city safe, the biggest and safest city, that provides opportunities for people, and that is Babajide Sanwo-Olu,” he stated.

Speaking further, the governor who’s seeking re-election explained that “if you have an emergency at 3 am, who would you call, what are your chances? Will you call a man that has the experience that has gone through the trenches before, that lives with it, that understands what the issues are and that appreciates what challenge you have even at that 3am? Or will you leave your chance to a man who does not know where the dial is and does not know what the issue of governance is?

“This is Lagos, this is an informed audience. This is not a tea party. We are talking of real governance and the lives of over 20 million Nigerians bigger than the economy of Ghana or Kenya which is in itself a country. It is not a circus, it is a real thing and I don’t want to spite anyone because I have respect for all of the candidates that have emerged and the candidate of the particular party you are talking about.”

Peter Obi Promises To Fix National Grid Collapse Issue

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of Labour Party, has promised to fix the national grid collapse challenge Nigeria has frequently battled in recent times.

It would be recalled that two days ago, some parts of Nigeria experienced a total blackout as the national grid collapsed for the seventh time this year (2022).

Reacting to the development, Obi in a series of tweets, stated that his team has a strategic plan to progressively scale up power generation and the liberalisation of the transmission infrastructure in the country, to ensure that Nigerians enjoy adequate and stable power supply from 2023 onwards.

The tweets read: “The report of yet another national grid collapse is very disturbing to me and is a reminder of the long rescue and recovery journey ahead of us. Effective power generation, transmission and distribution remain a national security issue.

This also places power on the front burner of campaign and policy. Painfully, this latest episode is the 7th national grid collapse in 2022. As part of the Obi-Datti policy plan, we have put together a strategic plan to progressively scale up power generation, and the liberalisation of the transmission infrastructure in the country, to ensure that Nigerians enjoy adequate and stable power supply from 2023 onwards. Power is critical to the development and sustainability of all sectors of the national economy.

For us, power remains a top priority. Under my watch, national grid collapse will become a matter of history and a reference point for erstwhile administrations.”

Ortom Distances Self From Wike's Call For Ayu's Resignation

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has distanced himself from his Rivers State counterpart, Nyesom Wike, who had since been seeking the resignation of Iyorchia Ayu as the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ortom, who’s a longstanding ally of Wike, made his submission in a statement cited by Newsrand on Tuesday, September 27, 2022.

Contradicting Wike’s position that Ayu must resign to resolve the ongoing crisis in the party, Ortom expressed confidence in the PDP National Chairman.

The statement read: “Governor Ortom vouched for the integrity and capacity of Dr Iyorchia Ayu to lead and rebuild the PDP to victory and rescue Nigeria from the misrule of the APC maladministration. That is why Ayu was returned unopposed by the northern caucus of the party and got elected as the national chairman of the PDP at the party’s convention.

Where was Jemgbagh Development Association, when Governor Ortom galvanised support from across the leaders of the party to make Dr. Ayu PDP’s National Chairman? What was their contribution to that project that they now want to use clannish stance to blackmail the governor?

“This amorphous and emergency Jemgbagh Development Association, Abuja, which has never been heard of before, is now masquerading as the voice of Jemgbagh to embark on campaign of calumny against Governor Ortom, who has worked selflessly for the people of Benue State.

Governor Ortom is more Jemgbagh than most of the people claiming it now. This is fact, because he has done more for Jemgbagh, both in terms of appointments and projects executed as well as patronage in the area, than even one of the Jemgbagh sons, who was governor. Besides, Governor Ortom has consistently worked for the unity of Benue State and will never stand in the way of any of her citizens, either here in the state or in the diaspora.

For those, who claimed to be leaders of this Jemgbagh Development Association, Abuja, we urge them to be truly developmental in their drive to build cohesion among the people and attract real development to their area rather than engaging in mischief or blackmail.”
