NLNG To Supply 100 Percent Of Cooking Gas To Nigerian Market

The Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) has disclosed that all cooking gas produced will be supplied only to the domestic market.

This was revealed in a statement by the company, stating that privatization will be given to the Nigerian market for 100 percent of its cooking gas (Butane) production.

The NLNG added that for the country’s economy to further deepen its utilization of gas, a scheme has been developed to sustainably supply propane for usage in cooking gas blending as well as in agro-allied, autogas, power, and petrochemical sectors.

To increase the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) availability in the country, these initiatives were put in place, as the NLNG is currently the highest single supplier of LPG into the domestic market, with an estimated 400,000 metric tonnes supplied in 2021.

The head of the NLNG, Dr. Philip Mshelbila announcement marked the company’s strong commitment to the continued growth of the domestic LPG market and its passion to increase utilization of one of the most versatile energy sources in the world.

“Committing 100 percent of our LPG supply is a major milestone in our journey of domestic gas supply. We supplied our first butane cargo into the domestic market in 2007, which helped to develop over the years the LPG industry in Nigeria from less than 50,000 tonnes to over 1 million tonnes market size annually by the end of 2020.

“In 2021, we increased our LPG supply commitment from 350,000 metric tonnes (or 28 million 12.5kg cylinders) to actual delivery of 400,000 metric tonnes (or 32 million 12.5kg cylinders) thereby directing most of our products into the domestic market.

“But this was not enough for NLNG, hence this commitment to do all that we possibly can and supply 100 percent of our LPG production to the domestic market.”

“Other countries are revolutionizing their energy industry to cut down on carbon emissions drastically. Nigeria should not be left out in this drive, considering its abundant gas resources.

“Gas is essential for life and living at the moment because it can support everything we will need to develop our economy and create better living standards for Nigerians. We need to change the narrative, and NLNG is being pragmatic about it.”

“Nigeria LNG Limited supplied LPG both to the Nigerian and international markets before now. With the decision of the Board of Directors, all of the company’s LPG production will be delivered to the domestic market.”

INEC: How Electoral Bill Delay Affects 2023 General Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that the schedule of activities for the 2023 general elections is affected by the delay of assent of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

Recall, late December 2021, President Muhammadu Buhari had refused to assent to the controversial Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill due to the country’s situation.

In a letter addressed to Senate President Ahmed Lawan, Buhari noted that he couldn’t sign the bill, as the prevailing situation in the country didn’t allow him to do so.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC Chairman, had disclosed the effect of this on Tuesday in Abuja at the first quarterly meeting with political parties for 2022, said the commission was looking forward to a speedy passage of the bill.

He said the commission will release the timetable for the 2023 elections immediately after President Muhammad Buhari signs the Electoral Amendment Bill into law.

“On the Electoral Amendment Bill currently before the National Assembly, the commission is encouraged by the Senate president’s assurance to give priority attention to the bill and the commitment by the president to assent to the bill as soon as the issue of mode of primaries by political parties is resolved.

“We look forward to a speedy passage of the bill, which is crucial to our preparations for future elections. As soon as it is signed into law, the commission will quickly release the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2023 general elections based on the new law,” Yakubu said.

He said this year is going to be a very busy one for the commission and the political parties, with the 2023 general elections just 396 days away, thus all the critical preparations must be concluded this year.

The INEC chairman urged the political parties to continue to encourage eligible voters who have not registered to do so, bearing in mind that those who had registered at any time previously need not register again.
