Bandits Are Being Released Without Punishment - Zamfara Gov.

The Governor of Zamfara, Bello Mohammed Matallawe, has decried over the release of Bandits without charges or punishment, claiming it is the cause of their constant terror.

The Governor disclosed this when he was visited by delegates of the Federal Government over recent terrorist attacks in the state.

Those who visited the Governor headed by Minister of Defence, Major-General Bashir Salihi Magashi (rtd) were, the National Security Adviser, Major-General Babagana Munguno rtd, Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba Alkali.

“Another problem we have noticed is that despite the remarkable zeal of our troops, they lack modern equipment with which to prosecute modern warfare. Prosecution of modern warfare depends largely on modern war equipment and gadgets. It is very vital for these modern war instruments to be provided to our troops if we are to win this fight against banditry in Zamfara and the North West”

“It is evident that unless enough modern equipment is provided to our security forces to fight the war effectively, the country faces the danger of anarchy. This could be foreseen from the recent calls by some leaders for their people to take up arms to defend themselves. It is a recipe for lawlessness when the state loses its monopoly over the instruments of coercion.

“As a matter of urgency, the Federal Government should procure Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) and deploy them across all parts of the country. If 1000 APCs could be made available, they would go a long way in turning the tide of the war against the bandits in a short period of time, Insha Allah.

“I want to draw the attention of the Federal Government to the fact that the pockets of insurgencies in many parts of the north are interrelated. In some instances, evidence has been found of connection between Boko Haram and some of the bandit groups operating in the northwest.

“There should be a comprehensive review of our strategy of fighting insurgency. We need a more workable plan of action tailored explicitly in tune with the realities on the ground. This is a clarion call for us to step up efforts in this fight before the dreadful monster consumes our region and the country as a whole.

“I would like to add that any strategy to be drawn for fighting banditry and all forms of insurgency should focus greater attention on Zamfara State. Our forests have become fortresses for bandits, from where they plan and launch attacks to other parts of the northwest,” he added.

He said as part of the strategy, special forces should be deployed to some black spots, particularly identified to be more dangerous centers of activities of the bandits.

Matawalle said in his administration’s search for peace, he built cooperation not just with the affected states but with the authorities of the Niger Republic. They had also employed Service Hunters and provided them with motorcycles and allowances.

He said they had paid the Service Hunters the sum of N53 million, in addition to their full upkeep. In the aftermath of the recent attacks in Anka and Bukkuyum Local Government Areas, they had expended the sum of N250 million to provide vehicles, and allowances for both the Civilian JTF and the conventional security outfits.

Earlier, Magashi said the federal government is all out to bring an end to killings plaguing the country, adding that they are on top of the situation.

He said the federal government is doing much better in order to secure the country assuring that killings of this magnitude would never happen again and that federal would come to the aid of the victims of the attacks.

Ebonyi South Senatorial Primaries: Umahi Vows To Contest, Dismisses Eze's Claim

The Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi has assured his participation in fresh Ebonyi South senatorial primaries while dismissing Ann Agom-Eze’s claim.

Disclosing this in a statement, the Governor’s media aide, Chooks Okoh stated that the runner-up is trying to garner cheap sympathy for her loss.

“The attention of Ebonyi state Governor has once again been drawn to the bizarre antics of Mrs. Ann Agom Eze in her quest to keep deceiving the public and gain unmerited sympathy in a bogus attempt to fly the APC flag as the candidate for Ebonyi South Senatorial zone. The statement read.

“While the society was still grappling with her perjury tantrums to a revered court of law, she is again employing primitive tactics and resorting to crude self-help in a bid to clinch a mandate she has no claim to, anyhow.

“In a most provocative and highly contemptuous letter addressed to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court Abuja, Mrs. Agom Eze went hallucinating about an imaginary court procedure and how it will end, raising disparaging insinuations against the governor in the process.

“The Governor would have ignored the letter and its puerile contents but for the fact that silence is thought to mean consent in our society.

“The general public is enjoined to disregard these deliberate concoctions and misleading rants from a woman who had sought to represent a people got rejected but is now bent on showing them the rough edges they would have gotten from her.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Governor Umahi is ready for the Ebonyi South Senatorial APC rerun elections set for Sunday, 31st July 2022 where he hopes to receive the nod of his party to stand in the 2023 elections as their candidate in that senatorial zone.

“The general public, and the judiciary, in particular, are enjoined to disregard and totally ignore the veiled blackmail and an attempt to be a senatorial candidate by hook or crook instead of through known standards.”

On the 28th of May, The All Progressive Congress(APC) held primaries for the Ebonyi South Senatorial District.

David Umahi’s brother, Austine, won the primaries, with Mrs. finishing second as she appealed to the High Court, as a judgment of fresh primaries was passed.

Umahi was declared winner, unopposed in the second primary after his younger brother, Austine withdrew as the candidate of the party.

A Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki, had last Friday, disqualified Governor Umahi and averred that Agom-Eze, who was the second runner-up in the May 28, 2022 primaries, be allowed to contest the 2023 senatorial election.

ASUU: El-Rufai Promises To Sack All Striking Lecturers

ASUU: El-Rufai Promises To Sack All Striking Lecturers

As the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike continues, Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna has promised to sack all lecturers that are part of the demonstration in the state.

Newsrand understands that ASUU has been on strike since February, a development that had since suspended academic operations in public universities across the country.

Addressing issues on the strike, El-Rufai warned all lecturers to return to classes, saying failure to do so, they are risking to be sacked.

According to the governor, Kaduna State University (KASU) lecturers had no reason to embark on strike, adding that it was the Federal Government they had an issue with and not the state government.

His words: “The Acting Vice Chancellor has assured me that they will resume, but I have asked them to find out if they actually resumed work because I initially instructed that their salary be stopped. But I was later told they didn’t join the strike, so I asked that it should be investigated and those that who collected their salary and joined the strike will be asked to refund the salary.

This is because Nigeria’s law says ‘no work, no pay’. This is the law. So whoever joined the strike will not be paid a salary. We have been telling the KASU lecturers that they have no problem with the State government. ASUU’s problem is with the Federal government. Therefore, why will our staff who have no problems with us join the strike?

If this continues, I will wake up one day to sack them all, I swear to God. We will sack them all and declare their positions vacant on the pages of newspapers. They once did the same thing and we gave them warning, now they repeated it. I’m only waiting to receive the report from the commissioner for education. I swear to God, we will sack all those that joined the strike if they refuse to resume work.”
