DSS Denies Claim Of Maltreating Kanu In Custody

BREAKING: Court Strikes Out 8 Of 15 Charges Against Nnamdi Kanu

The Department of State Services (DSS), has claimed that detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, is being given special treatment in its custody denying claims by the leadership of the group that he is being denied basic needs.

This was disclosed by the Public Relations Officer of the DSS, Dr. Peter Afunanya at a world press conference in Abuja on Tuesday.

Afunanya said contrary to IPoB’s claims, Kanu is being given all that he needs and has never been denied a change of clothes and practice of Jewish religion.

Afunanya said: “On IPOB and the alleged ill-treatment of its detained leader, the Service has, without any fear of contradiction, applied restraint in making public statements over the matter.

The reason is simply that it avoids joining issues especially over a matter that is sub-judice. But for the sake of transparency and democratic accountability, the Service has decided to make some clarifications.

“The Service denies all the inciting allegations by IPOB and states that Nnamdi Kanu is not, in any way, maltreated in custody. Accusations of maltreatment negate the Service’s Standard Operation Procedure on the implementation of rights of a suspect.

“Nnamdi Kanu enjoys full luxury in the holding facility incomparable to any of its type anywhere in the country. He is accorded full rights and privileges. He is never denied his right of worship or freedom from his select religious practice.

“Adequate attention is paid to Kanu’s health. He has unhindered access to the best medical care and doctors. Kanu, himself, has confirmed to his visitors that the Service has never, in any way, maltreated him.

He even confirmed this to the quartet of Senators Ike Ekweremadu and Enyinnaya Abaribe; Bishop Sunday Onuoha of the Methodist Church, Nigeria, and Co-Chair, Interfaith Dialogue Forum for Peace and Ambassador Okechukwu Emuchay, MFR, Secretary-General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, who saw him on Wednesday, 8th December 2021.

“The story of Kanu being starved is fallacious.  He could not have been starved as he enjoys meals of his choice.

That he is not allowed a change of clothing is also false. He is regularly allowed change of clothing as against what is presented to the public by IPOB propagandists.

Assuming he is being maltreated, how come his visitors told him he was looking well? All the allegations of violation of his rights as a suspect, victimization, and starvation among others are not true.

“It is unfortunate that some elements have decided to use outright misinformation to represent the state of affairs.  Those who make these false stories do so to attract undue attention for the singular purpose of achieving the desired end.

“Rather than focus on how he should get justice, Kanu’s legal team and some mischievous elements among them have chosen to use fake news to mislead the public.  While the Court in its wisdom ordered that Kanu be remanded in the safer DSS Custody, some of his legal representatives, for reasons best known to them, preferred Kuje Prison and have failed to explain the rationale for such choice.

“It may interest the public to note that a particular lawyer among Kanu’s Team is feasting on the matter such that one can conclude that his interest is beyond getting justice for his client. Be that as it may, the Court has the final say on the matter.

“Pursuant to the provisions of the Electric Power Sector Reform Act (EPSRA), the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission adopted the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) Methodology in setting out the basis and procedures for determination of licensees revenue requirements and review of electricity tariffs in Nigeria.

“The methodology provides for Minor Reviews (every 6 months), Major Reviews (every 5 years), and Extraordinary Reviews in instances where industry parameters have changed significantly from those used in the operating tariffs to such an extent that a review is required urgently to maintain the viability of the electricity industry.

“We wish to clarify that such reviews do not automatically translate to an increase in tariffs. Indeed where the impact of improved efficiency in operating parameters for individual licensees exceeds the impact of changes in macroeconomic parameters, the end-user tariffs may be reduced as exhibited in some tariff classes under MYTO 2022.

“In compliance with EPSRA and other relevant industry rules, this notice is issued to inform the general public and industry stakeholders of the Commission’s intention to commence the processes for the July 2022 Minor Review of MYTO 2022 to consider changes in relevant macroeconomic indices, generation capacity and CAPEX required for evacuation and distribution of the available generation capacity in compliance with extant rules”.

The notice came two weeks after the Commission unveiled the new rates for electricity tariff which it effected on February 1, 2022.

UTME 2022: No Errors In Our Scoring System, Be Wary Of Sham, JAMB Warns

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has disclosed that the just-concluded Unified Tertiary Matriculation (UTME) examination is error-free, regardless of circulated rumors.

The JAMB’s PRO Director, Fabian Benjamin disclosed this in a statement, warning candidates of fraudsters who are spreading fake news on another UTME for the 2022 session.

“The UTME is a computer-based test that is scored electronically with no human mediation whatsoever. According to the statement.

“The board has no plans to conduct another UTME for the 2022 session.

“Consequently, the unfounded rumors making the rounds are nothing but the products of the deceitful brains of the masterminds of these baseless imputations.

“Hence, the Board reiterates that there is no room for errors in its electronic scoring system, nor does it plan to

“This clarification became necessary following reports of a purported rescheduling of the UTME from a section of the social media citing phantom errors in the computer scoring system and a purported apology from JAMB to the effect that another UTME would be organized.

“The Board wishes to state that the report is not only false, mischievous but also misleading and crafted out of the frustration and inability of these fraudsters to dupe unsuspecting candidates owing to the series of innovative strategies the board had put in place to protect candidates.

“The public would recall that the board had envisaged some of these inglorious strategies of these nefarious individuals and had sounded a warning to the candidates and the general public alike to preclude the possibilities of them falling victims of the evil machinations of fraudsters.

“JAMB, once again, advises the general public to disregard these items of news as it does not emanate from JAMB, nor has it authorized any individual or group to make such a pronouncement on its behalf.

“The Board, therefore, advises candidates to avail themselves of its user-friendly advisories on assessing their 2022 UTME results and other processes through periodic visits to www.jamb.gov.ng.”
