Wike Orders Local Government Chairmen To Expose Illegal Refineries

Rivers governor, Nyesom Wike has ordered local government chairmen to provide a comprehensive list of illegal refineries and their operators within their jurisdiction.

During a meeting with the council chairmen and heads of the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air force, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Police, the Directorate of State Service (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Wike issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the 23 local government chairmen in the state to obey the order.

While challenging the council chairmen to prove they were not complicit in the noxious business that had continued to threaten the health of Rivers people and the national economy, the governor maintained that as a responsible government, it would be unwise for them to fold their hands and do nothing to safeguard residents of the state from the death forced upon them by criminally-minded operators of artisanal refineries.

Now, every council chairman must go and identify where illegal refineries are taking place. If you identify one, you get N2 million. So, go and identify as many as you can.

I will pay N2 million for each one. And I am going to fight against this. Our people are dying and we owe our people the responsibility to protect them, to save them from death they never caused.

So, you must, and you’re given 48 hours to go and identify all illegal refineries sites, and those who are in charge of them,” Wike was quoted as saying.

The governor, however, advised that any of the council chairmen who were afraid to join in the fight against the criminals operating the illegal refineries should be ready to resign.

Amotekun To Go Against Buhari, Vows Not To Back Down

Amotekun To Go Against Buhari, Vows Not To Back Down

Security forces from the South-West ‘Amotekun’ vows to continue protecting their citizens, regardless of President Buhari’s disagreement with state police.

Recall, the President’s had stated that “State police is not an option” in the country during an interview on Channels Television.

The decision did not sit well with the Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE), stating that the rejection of state police is Buhari’s personal opinion, according to the group’s Secretary-General, Dr. Kunle Olajide.

“He is the president of this country; therefore, the views of Nigerians ought to influence his personal opinion, particularly when you consider the state of insecurity in the country.

“Also, in his part of the country, in the northern region, I am surprised that Mr. President believes that state police is not an option. There is no federalism anywhere in the world where the police system is centralized. There is none, particularly in a country as vast as Nigeria. Nigeria is a very big country, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Sahara desert. It is a vast country and a heterogeneous country.

“The reality of this country is that we are different people who agreed to live together, since 1914, over 100 years. I am a Nigerian nationalist. I believe in Nigeria if it is properly managed and if we have a fully people’s federal republic and not a centralized unitary system.

“So, for me, I don’t agree with him because we are different people, different histories, different cultures, different beliefs and we must sit down together and have a new constitution, I don’t belong to the group that believes that about 250 million people should be operating on a fraudulent constitution which in its first sentence claims we, the people of Nigeria, have agreed to, whereas we never sat anywhere to agree to the 1999 Constitution.

“For me, Nigeria, as important as it is, in the entire black world, in Africa, and with the quality of national and human resources that we have, we should be uncomfortable operating a fake constitution that lies against itself.”

On his part, the Amotekun Corps Commander in Ekiti State, Brig. Gen. Joe Komolafe (retd) said President Buhari’s position on state police would not deter the outfit from securing the state and beyond.

The commander, who spoke with Vanguard, said without the presence of state government policy, the creation of Amotekun has filled the void with a reduction in crime rates.

Komolafe, however, said for security reasons, he would not disclose the strategies and plans to be used in securing the state.

He said: “Let me tell you that with or without state police, we have been securing the state, there is no doubt about this.

“We will continue to do this across the region because our people must be able to go about their activities without any fear of being attacked.

“So, we are on the ground to ensure the security of lives and property and nothing can stop this.”
