e-Naira: Nearly 600,000 Download Since Its Launch - CBN

Mr. Godwin Emefiele, Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), says that in less than four weeks, the e-Naira app had witnessed almost 600,000 downloads since its launch in October.

Emefiele made the disclosure at the 56th Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) Annual Bankers Dinner, on Friday night at the Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos.

“In less than 4 weeks since its launch, almost 600,000 downloads of the e-Naira application have taken place.

“Efforts are ongoing to encourage faster adoption of the e-Naira by Nigerians who do not have smartphones.

“The support of the financial industry will be critical in the ongoing deployment of the e-Naira and efforts are ongoing to encourage continued partnership between the CBN and stakeholders in the financial industry,’’ he said.

The CBN governor noted that building a robust payment system that would provide cheap, efficient, and faster means of conducting payments for most Nigerians have always been the focus of the apex bank.

According to him, “the growing pace of digitization globally, makes it essential that we leverage digital channels in fulfilling this objective”.

Emefiele said that total transaction volumes using digital channels more than doubled between 2018 and 2020, as volumes rose from 1.3 billion to over 3.3 billion financial transactions in 2020.

He said that Digital payment channels also helped to support the continued conduct of business activities during the lockdown.

He said the banking sector’s robust payment system has continued to evolve towards meeting the needs of households and businesses in Nigeria, reflective of the confidence in our payment system, indicating that between 2015 and September 2021, about US$900 million has been invested in firms run by Nigerian founders.

“Notwithstanding these gains, close to 36 percent of adult Nigerians do not have access to financial services.

“Improving access to finance for individuals and businesses through digital channels can help to improve financial inclusion, lower the cost of transactions, and increase the flow of credit to households and businesses,’’ he stressed.

INEC: How Electoral Bill Delay Affects 2023 General Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that the schedule of activities for the 2023 general elections is affected by the delay of assent of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.

Recall, late December 2021, President Muhammadu Buhari had refused to assent to the controversial Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill due to the country’s situation.

In a letter addressed to Senate President Ahmed Lawan, Buhari noted that he couldn’t sign the bill, as the prevailing situation in the country didn’t allow him to do so.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC Chairman, had disclosed the effect of this on Tuesday in Abuja at the first quarterly meeting with political parties for 2022, said the commission was looking forward to a speedy passage of the bill.

He said the commission will release the timetable for the 2023 elections immediately after President Muhammad Buhari signs the Electoral Amendment Bill into law.

“On the Electoral Amendment Bill currently before the National Assembly, the commission is encouraged by the Senate president’s assurance to give priority attention to the bill and the commitment by the president to assent to the bill as soon as the issue of mode of primaries by political parties is resolved.

“We look forward to a speedy passage of the bill, which is crucial to our preparations for future elections. As soon as it is signed into law, the commission will quickly release the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2023 general elections based on the new law,” Yakubu said.

He said this year is going to be a very busy one for the commission and the political parties, with the 2023 general elections just 396 days away, thus all the critical preparations must be concluded this year.

The INEC chairman urged the political parties to continue to encourage eligible voters who have not registered to do so, bearing in mind that those who had registered at any time previously need not register again.
