Supplementary Budget Dedicated For Defense Capabilities – Presidency

Supplementary Budget Dedicated For Defense Capabilities – Presidency

Mr. Ahmad Zakari, the Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Infrastructures, says the large chunk of the proposed supplementary budget of N982 billion has been designated for defense capabilities.

Zakari said this on Thursday at the 11th National Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Nigerian Institution of Space Engineers (NISE) in Abuja.

The conference is themed: “Combating Kidnapping and Banditry in Nigeria: Role of Space Technologies and ICTs, Security Establishment and the State”.

The special adviser said that the Organisation for Economic Co-operation Development (OECD) countries spend two to three percent of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in research which Nigeria had been lagging.

He added that the government was supportive of science and Technology, research agencies so they could harness local capabilities.

Zakari said: “Recently, the government has approved one percent of the country’s GDP for the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) to boost the development of locally made infrastructures and for national security.

“The N982 billion supplementary budget has the large chunk of it dedicated for defense capabilities.

“I encourage NISE, security agencies to engage in discussions around patronage of locally made security equipment which will reduce capital flight in that sector,” he said.

He regretted that security challenges in the country had a serious economic impact, leading to joblessness and insecurities.

According to him, we need to invest in Unmanned aerial tracking systems, new age technology which included Space technology to combat banditry and terrorism in the country.

Dr. George Okpanachi, the National Chairman of the NISE, recognized that kidnapping and pockets of insecurities were huge national challenges.

Okpanachi said that NISE had the capacity to contribute its quota towards addressing insecurities in the country.

According to him, the capacity is there but there is a lack of infrastructure and we need the government’s support in the area of Infrastructures.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Mr. Babagana Mohammed, said the government needed to deliberately engage some local companies already in the production of security equipment.

Mohammed also advised members of NISE and the NSE to be ethical in their profession, engage in skills development that would degenerate to lifting Nigerians out of poverty.

The Special Guest at the event, Mr. Kashim Ali, said although investments in space technology and ICT were for the long term but would be an investment well made.

Ali reiterated that there was a need to support and strengthen government institutions towards addressing local problems.

Other goodwill messages were from the National Space Research and Development Agency, Nigeria Police, and Defense Space Administration, among others.

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday, appealed to the Senate Chief Whip, Sen. Orji Kalu to return to the party.

The National Secretary of the Party, Sen. Samuel Anyanwu, made the appeal when he led a delegation of members of the PDP to visit Kalu in his Abuja residence.

The appeal is coming barely two weeks that the National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Sen. Bola Tinubu visited the former governor of Abia in Abuja. Anyanwu, shortly after a one-hour closed-door meeting with Kalu, said that their meeting centred on what would be profitable to the country.

According to him, we came to visit a friend, a leader in the South-East and one of our own and to acquaint him with the developments in our party.

“And to let him know the reason why he should move over to our party. We had a good discussion and this is just the beginning,’’ he said.

Anyanwu noted that the visit was part of efforts by the PDP to bring their members back and reposition the party.

“We are talking about bringing people back to the party because the more the merrier.

“This is a place he started, so you have to leave where you are and go back to where you started,’’ Anyanwu stressed. Kalu, an ardent supporter of President Muhammadu Buhari and a reliable member of the APC left the PDP in November 2016.

Though he has not openly declared interest in the 2023 presidential election, his presidential posters flooded major cities in the country recently.

“We must never relent in ensuring that we keep to the ideals of the country and we don’t lose sight of what we are trying to achieve here.

“The president has always remained steadfast and focused in resolving the problems of the country beginning with security.

“He is a steady hand; he is unflappable, he is not panicky, he is focused and looking at the security issues every day, and trying to advance the best possible solutions,’’ Osinbajo said.

“People who suggest that the country breaks up, whatever may be the reason for their views, are certainly not correct and we must say so to them at every turn.

“The unity of this country is important for all of the different ethnicities, religions, everybody. Whatever the group or ideology, unity is important for every one of us.

“It is wrong for a country that is the largest economy in Africa and definitely going to be one of the largest economies in the world, to start thinking in terms of fragmenting itself.

“If you fragment, the problems are going to multiply, poverty will multiply,’’ the vice-president added.

Earlier, the National Coordinator of the visiting group, Usman Ibrahim, commended Osinbajo for his commitment to leadership and promotion of national unity.

Ibrahim said Osinbajo’s performance in office, his excellence, humility, loyalty, industry, professionalism, and dedication to duty were enviable.

He pledged the loyalty and support of the group for the actualization of the objectives of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

“We appreciate you for your sacrifices and commitment to the actualization of the `Next Level’ agenda, especially your commitment towards improving the welfare of the downtrodden through the platforms of “Tradermoni’’ and “Marketmoni’’, programs.

Ibrahim told the vice-president about the forthcoming launch of a compendium showcasing the achievements of the Buhari administration across different sectors.
