Klopp Explains Controversial Statement About AFCON

Klopp Explains Controversial Statement About AFCON

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has clarified his use of the phrase “little tournament” in reference to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, insisting it was meant as frustration in an ironic sense and not as an insult to the tournament.

Klopp explained to an offended journalist that his remark – which came after the 4-0 win against Arsenal on Saturday, November 20, 2021, – was a way of expressing his frustration at losing vital players at an important stage of the season.

Liverpool are set to lose Mohamed Salah, Naby Keita, and Sadio Mane for the month-long tournament, which runs from January 9 to February 6.

Replying to a journalist on Saturday, who asked if Klopp was “relieved” they had got through a busy period with “no international break until March“, Klopp laughed and replied: “I’ve heard that so often that there’s no international break until March. In January, there’s a little tournament in Africa, I just want to say, and I think Asia is playing games, too – South America as well, great, can’t wait.

Klopp was then speaking in his Champions League post-match press conference after Liverpool had secured a fifth straight win in the competition to beat Porto 2-0 on Wednesday, November 24.

After a journalist had said Klopp had insulted the players, fans, people, and continent of Africa with the comment, Klopp replied: “I didn’t mean it like that. I don’t know why you understand it like that.

“It’s not even close to the idea in my mind that I want to talk about AFCON as a little tournament, or the continent of Africa like a little continent, not at all.

What I meant is, because people said, and if you watch the full press conference, if you wanted to understand it in the right way you could have understood it in the right way. I said ‘there’s no international break anymore until March’ and I said: ‘Oh and there’s a little tournament in January,’ and I didn’t mean a little tournament, just like you say it when there’s still a tournament. It’s ironic. There’s still a tournament. A big one. We lose our best players to the Africa Cup of Nations.

I’m not a native speaker, but if you want to understand me wrong you can do that all the time. I know that I would never think like this. I never understand why you thought like this to be honest, but that’s really not OK, because I would never do that, but that’s it now.

“It was not my intention, but you made something of it. That’s not so cool as well to be 100 percent honest.”

2021 Ballon D’or: Football Fans Criticise Award Organisers For Awarding Messi

Ballon D'or: Former Winner Disappointed Over Lewandowski Snub

Robert Lewandowski and FC Bayern Munich did their best to hide their disappointment after Lionel Messi beat him to the Ballon d’Or.

However, former Bayern star, Lothar Matthaeus, was adamant the Poland striker should have won.

Lewandowski was awarded the new striker of the year award at the gala in Paris on Monday after journalists had decided France Football’s big prize should go to Lionel Messi for a record-extending seventh time.

Messi won a major international honour this year as Argentina captured Copa America but Matthaeus was staggered that Lewandowski’s record 41 goals in a Bundesliga season were not enough for the Ballon d’Or.

“Honestly, I don’t understand the world anymore after this vote.

“I have huge respect for Messi and the other great players who were nominated, but nobody deserved it more than Lewandowski,” former Germany player Matthaeus, who won the prize while at Inter Milan in 1990, told Sky.

Lewandowski’s claims to the Ballon d’Or were strengthened by the fact most pundits accepted he would have won it in 2020 had the award not been cancelled because of Covid-19.

Last year he led Bayern to a Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup treble with another glut of goals.

He at least won FIFA’s rival player of the year award in 2020 and was magnanimous as he picked up his striker gong at the Chatelet Theatre.

“I am very proud to be here. I have to say thanks to my teammates, my coach and above all the fans. And a very special thanks to my family,” said the 33-year-old.

To be fair to Messi, he realised he was fortunate to take another Ballon d’Or after only winning the Copa del Rey with troubled Barcelona last season before switching to Paris Saint-Germain.

“It is an honour to be here with you. You have broken records and would have also deserved to win the Ballon d’Or. You had an unbelievable year,” he said to Lewandowski.

Bayern chief executive, Oliver Kahn, was as diplomatic as possible.

“Congratulations to Lionel Messi.

“But along with his striker of the year award, Robert Lewandowski would have also deserved the Ballon d’Or because for years he has been absolutely outstanding every day,” he said.

Bayern also saw Jamal Musiala finish third in the Kopa Trophy young player vote behind winner Pedri of Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund’s England midfielder, Jude Bellingham.

Manuel Neuer was fifth in the best goalkeeper category.

Below is a list of the top ten winners at the 2021 Ballon d’Or awards:

1. Lionel Messi (ARG/PSG)

2. Robert Lewandowski (POL/Bayern Munich)

3. Jorginho (ITA/Chelsea)

4. Karim Benzema (FRA/Real Madrid)

5. N’Golo Kante (FRA/Chelsea)

6. Cristiano Ronaldo (POR/Juventus – Manchester United)

7. Mohamed Salah (EGY/Liverpool)

8. Kevin De Bruyne (BEL/Manchester City)

9. Kylian Mbappe (FRA/Paris SG)

10. Gianluigi Donnarumma (ITA/AC Milan – Paris SG)
