Newsrand Readers Blame Government For Hijab Crisis In Kwara
Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq, Kwara State

No fewer than 50% of Newsrand readers, blamed the government for the crisis that emerged from the directive that female students should be allowed to use hijab in Christian schools.

The state government had directed all public schools to henceforth allow female students to use the hijab, including schools with a Christian heritage.

The state government had announced the decision to end the conflict between the two major religious communities in the state, a development that invited crisis.

The conflict is over the use of the hijab by female Muslim students attending schools taken over long ago from their Christian founders by the government.

The government had temporarily shut 10 grant-aided secondary schools in Ilorin, the state capital after Muslim female students insisted on using the head covering in the schools.

However, in a poll that sought to know who’s to be blamed, the AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq-led government became a center of focus for Newsrand’s correspondents.

According to the state government, the policy was anchored on mutual respect that will lead to sustainable peace and communal harmony.

Although, Newsrand Readers disagree with the school of thought and blames The Government for instituting a policy that brought chaos to the state.

Other percentages however faulted the Muslim extremists, as they believed that every student is to adhere to the code of dressing that governs a particular institution.

Some insignificant number still believe that the missionary school carries blame on the matter for preventing a student entrance into a public school for wearing a hijab according to her belief.

Pep Guardiola’s team will be looking for a treble this season after clinching both the EFL Cup and the EPL cup.

The two managers are no newbie in the Finals of the Champions League, with Guardiola more decorated amongst the two.

Chelsea Fc will be looking to acquire the trophy for the second time in their career.

Head-To-Head:

The two clubs have met three times this year with Chelsea being more victorious winning two of the matches.

The London side displaced City in the semifinals of the FA Cup this season, with just a single goal in the match.

While in the English League, both clubs were able to win four matches in their last six games.

Champions League Form:

Man City have been outstanding in the Champions League this season, winning 11 of their 12 matches, conceding just 4 goals.

They were able to eliminate last season’s finalist PSG, in the semis of the competition.

Whilst Chelsea, although pretty impressive this season have already lost to FC Porto, winning 8 games out of 12.

Tuchel’s side eliminated the giants of the League’s competition ‘Real Madrid‘, and also conceding just 4 goals in the competition.

Players To Watch Out For:

Mason Mount: The England international has been by no doubt Chelsea’s outstanding player this season.

He is good with the ball in the Midfield area, a brilliant passer, a good dribbler with pace, and can also score and create scoring opportunities.

Phil Foden: Also an England international who is regarded as the future of football by soccer analysts.

Although an attacking midfielder, he is also being deployed as a forward as he is strong with the ball, keeping defenders on their toe, and a wonderful finisher.

Newsrand Prediction:

Both teams are expected to put on a good show in today’s game. They both have a solid defense and lack no brilliancy in the midfield area.

When it comes to scoring, Manchester City has the advantage with a lot of options who can put the ball past any Keeper.

This would be the first time the two clubs would be meeting in a final game.

Man United has already won the competition before in the 2016/17 season while Villarreal would be yearning for their first major European trophy.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær is yet to win a trophy with Manchester United as he looks forward to today’s game.

While, Villarreal coach, Unai Emery has lifted the cup three times in his career with Sevilla, whilst also taking Arsenal to the finals.

Villarreal will have more to play for as they were unable to secure a place at the champions league next season, and winning this trophy would guarantee them a one-way ticket.

Head-To-Head:

The clubs have met four times in the 2005/06 and 2008/09 UEFA Champions League group stage respectively, both teams playing a goalless draw in the matches.

Europa League Form:

Emery’s side has been very impressive in the competition this season, having played 14 matches without a single loss, winning 12 and drawing 2.

Villarreal has already eliminated an English side in the competition, sending Arsenal home in the semi-finals.

This would be Villarreal’s first final in European competition as they would want to see their unbeaten run this season stretched further.

Manchester United has played lesser matches this season in the Europa, having played 8 matches with 5 wins, 2 draws, and a loss.

The club lost their last game in the competition, although it was not enough to knock them out as they had already secured a long winning margin in the first leg against Roma.

Players To Watch Out For:

Gerard Moreno: The Spaniard already has a total number of 6 goals in the competition this season, and has been impressive in all competitions.

Edison Cavani: Just a goal short of his counterpart with lesser matches played. Cavani is a goal machine, very quick to put the ball in the back of the net. He is a veteran in the game.

Newsrand Prediction:

With more experience in the game on the side of the Villarreal coach, and with everything to play for and more hunger in the eyes of the players to clinch their first major European trophy.

EXPLAINER: Everything You Need To Know About NAFEX, New Exchange Rate

EXPLAINER: Everything You Need To Know About NAFEX, New Exchange Rate

Yesterday (Tuesday, May 25, 2021), the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) officially adopted the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange (NAFEX) rate, a development that has seen naira weakened by 8 percent to N410.25 per $1.

NAFEX was introduced by the apex bank four years ago in response to the currency crisis at the time.

In a circular published on April 24th, 2017 by the FMDQOTC where the exchange rate is determined by the market, the circular read in part: “This Market Notice is issued pursuant to the Central Bank of Nigeria (“CBN”) circular dated April 21, 2017 (Ref:FMD/DIRCIR/GEN/08/007) and titled Establishment of Investors’ & Exporters’ FX Window which provides in clause 4.0 that in order to support appropriate benchmarking and facilitate derivatives activities in the newly established Investors’ & Exporters’ FX Window (the “Window”), FMDQ OTC Securities Exchange (“FMDQ”) will be developing and publishing a new fixing called NAFEX – the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Rate Fixing.

“NAFEX is the FMDQ reference rate for foreign exchange (“FX”) activities in the Investors’ & Exporters’ FX Window and is designed to represent Spot FX market rates in the Window. NAFEX rates will be generated independently and objectively and published every business day at 12 noon or at a time advised by FMDQ.”

Although, the market is meant to be independent of government and objective in its price determination, the CBN as a major supplier and regulator of forex in this market can influence the daily closing exchange rate.

Wondering how the NAFEX rates are determined?

NAFEX rates are determined by the FMDQ after pooling rate submissions by the 10 contributing banks who bid for forex on behalf of their clients.

“NAFEX is a polled rate based on the submissions of ten (10) contributing banks and calculated using a trimmed arithmetic mean. Upon receipt of quotes, the individual contributing banks’ submission is ranked in descending order. The lowest and highest two (2) quotes are eliminated from the ranked rates leaving only the middle six (6) rates. The arithmetic mean of the remaining rates are then calculated to two (2) decimal places and disseminated as the NAFEX Spot Rate,” the FMDQOTC stated.

What this means is that the rate is somewhat market-driven while it is far from operating as a fully-fledged flexible exchange rate.

Nigeria also operates multiple exchange rate windows ranging from the I&E (NAFEX) window where forex is traded between exporters, investors, and purchasers of forex, the Small and Medium Enterprises Equity Investment scheme (SMEIS) window, where forex is sold to importers and the Bureau De Change (BDC) window which is where forex is sold to retailers.

Naira falls…

Following the adoption of the NAFEX rate, Naira depreciated against the US dollar at the Investors and Exporters window to close at N411.56/$1 on Tuesday, May 25, 2021. This represents a 31 kobo drop when compared to the N411.25/$1 that was recorded the previous day.
