No less than two dead bodies have been recovered from the three-storey building collapse at 4 Alayaki Lane, Lagos Island.

The building, which was under construction, caved in during a heavy rainfall that pounded different parts of Lagos on Saturday, May 22, 2022.

The collapsed building came less than three weeks after a three-storey building gave way on Ibadan Street in the Ebute Metta area of Lagos on Sunday, May 1, killing 10 persons, including a member of the National Youth Service Corps identified only as Oluwakemi, and leaving about 24 occupants injured.

However, the South-West Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye said while two persons were recovered dead, some others were rescued alive.

But there were concerns that an unconfirmed number of persons may be trapped.

“A three-storey building under construction has just collapsed under the torrential rainfall on FreeRoad, Lagos Island. NEMA, LASEMA, and fire service are on the ground,” Farinloye said earlier.

The Director-General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Oluwafemi Oke-Osayintolu, who also confirmed the incident, said rescue efforts were still ongoing.

There was pandemonium in the Court of Appeal in Benin City late Friday, May 20, 2022, as suspected thugs allegedly supported by persons in security outfit uniforms, invaded the courtroom, chased away court workers, and carted away several documents.

It was gathered that some lawyers had approached the Appellate court to file an appeal arising from a judgment of the State High Court on issues relating to the crisis rocking the Peoples’ Democratic Party in Edo State.

The crisis concerned whose faction of the party loyal to the governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki, and the Vice-Chairman, South-South of the party, Chief Dan Orbih, have the authentic delegates list to participate in the party’s primary elections.

A lawyer who pleaded anonymity for security reasons said he was shuttling between a business centre in Akpakpava and the Appeal Court which is temporarily operating from a section of the Edo State High Court premises along Sapele Road as a result of the rehabilitation work going on its permanent premises in Aduwawa area of Benin City when the incident happened.

He said, “There was an injunction against the PDP faction led by Dan Orih and Ogbeide-Ihama recognising the delegates from Obaseki as the authentic delegates for the purpose of the congress of the PDP primary elections.

“They retained our services and we quickly swung into action and we were at the court to file necessary documents because the state High court had refused to join us as interested parties and then went ahead to give the ruling.

“We went to the Court of Appeal which granted our application to be joined. They now directed that we should compile and transmit our records; file all the papers we needed to file so that they can hear the case on Monday in the main appeal. That was what we were doing when suspected thugs and uniformed men came into the courtroom and chased away the staff.

“One of my staff was carried away in their bus because she refused to surrender the documents with her to the suspected thugs. She had to release the documents to save her life.”

The Federal Government has ordered the temporary closure of the Dei-Dei market after a previous riot had caused loss of lives and property damages.

Mohammad Bello, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory made the announcement, as he assured the general public that the riot was not tribal or religious.

“The community and market leaders must fish out hoodlums and bad eggs among them, unfortunately, this time around hoodlums carry arms and they shoot innocent people. The Minister said.

“As a matter of fact, I saw four corpses. This is very sad and totally unequivocally unacceptable in Abuja.

“We have agreed with security agencies that full-scale investigations will be done, and the communities have to be part and parcel of the solution or else there will be no peace.

“In the interim, the timber market and the surrounding markets, including all the activities on-road that have clustered the road and made it impassable, will all stop until the technical team reviews everything, and then we will take the next decision.

“I am appealing to other communities within the FCT that there is no tribal or religious misunderstanding because all the leaders of various communities have lived here in peace for many years.

“This is simply the matter of criminals and hoodlums taking laws into their hands.”

Recall, that on Wednesday there was a clash between okada riders and traders at the Dei-Dei International Market.

A death of a yet-to-be-identified woman in the area was said to have led to a clash between the traders and ‘Okada’ riders.

The clash resulted in the destruction of goods worth billions of naira in the market, while many vehicles were also destroyed.

The minister gave the directive after inspecting the scene of the incident with the FCT Commissioner of Police, Sunday Babaji, Director, State Security Services with other sister security agencies and top officials of the FCT Administration.

Bello also directed the community and the market leaders to fish out the hoodlums responsible for the crisis.
